Sugar Queen Link-Up #4

We are wrapping up our first book of the "I'd Rather Be Reading" Book Club! We read Sugar Queen by Sarah Addison Allen for January.

On to the questions:
  • Did you expect Della Lee to be a ghost? What did you make of the supernatural element that Sarah Addison Allen included in Sugar Queen?
I did not expect this at first. Of course something was off, who hides in anothers closet? My mind started to wonder when she was sitting in the same clothes and never came out of the closet, but I didn't necessarily jump to ghost, since nothing about this book was "supernatural." I think this element was definitely a surprise, but after finishing the entire story, I appreciated that story line and did not think it was out of place. With books popping up for Chloe, it makes sense to have a supernatural element push Josey and Chloe together!
  • Why do you think the affair remained such a taboo? After learning who Jake cheated with, were you shocked it was such a big deal?
To this day I still don't understand this entire affair. Okay, they partied a little hard, he ended up with the client or client's wife, whatever she was. But that was the entire story, they did not elaborate. I'm not a lawyer, so I do not know how this would have affected the case; however, to not tell Chloe when that is all she wanted? I am still really confused about all of that.
  • What were your thoughts as Josey tore up the attorney’s note abroad the ship? What do you think it said? Are secrets ever useful in a family, or do they always result in pain?
I think this was a sign Josey was taking control of her own life. From there on out she was going to believe what she wanted and not have anyone else dictate her life. Whatever the attorney's note said did not matter to her anymore and she was going to believe in whatever made her happy. I do think it proved that Della Lee was her sister and that Chloe was her sister as well. I do not think secrets are useful, in some cases maybe they are necessary. But I think you get to a point where you are old enough and mature enough to make your own decisions and move on. No matter what your family has done.
  • What did you think of the book? Was it what you expected?
I really enjoyed this book. It was a quick read. It was a bit slow at first and somewhat strange. I didn't know what to think at first, but then I fell for it! I loved the Josey and Adam storyline, they were adorable and I am a sucker for a cute love story.

I haven't done any of the linkups (shame on me!) but I DID read the book. I really enjoyed it - although at first I was afraid I wouldn't be able to get into it. I gave it a couple of chapters though and then I was hooked :)
